Saturday School

Saturday Special English Classes

At The Victoria International College, special English classes held on Saturdays are designed to encourage students to think for themselves, develop the ability to construct clear and concise arguments, present personal opinions, and to make themselves understood by others. These are skills that are absolutely essential in life and provide the confidence to pursue a career in any area, especially in today’s globalized environment where English is the common language spoken by the majority of the world.

English language is a compulsory core subject at TVIC and is designed to build key skills in all areas of the language. The importance of the subject cannot be underestimated. All subjects at the school are taught and tested in English, and therefore fluency in both written and spoken English is essential.

The Saturday English classes comprise three key components:

  1. Practical Spoken English
  2. Grammar and Writing Skills
  3. Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

The Practical Spoken English component focuses on enabling students to converse freely and fluently in the language and communicate their thoughts, ideas, questions and arguments effectively in everyday situations. Students will learn, listen to and respond to others’ views in class and take part in class discussions. Students will also put themselves in simulations of real life situations and learn casual and formal modes of communication via role play.

The Grammar and Writing Skills component is designed to prepare students for English language and literature examinations as well as to read accurately and with comprehension, write creatively and in various styles for different purposes and audiences, and widen their vocabulary.

Cambridge ESOL classes will be conducted by a panel of trained teachers for all students entering the Saturday special English classes. Examinations will be held at the British Council. TVIC conducts classes for the Starters, Movers, Flyers, and KET levels to date. Students under the age of 14 will be sorted into Starters, Movers or Flyers depending on their current standing according to Cambridge ESOL testing standards.
