The Victoria International College hosted its first annual Health Workshop on the 27th of November for students and parents of the Nursery and Grades 1 through 11. This event was also open to all Nursery aged children and their parents from other schools and institutions in he vicinity. Designed to make the public aware of children's mental and physical health, the workshop featured free dental and eye screening programmes, a lecture on dental health and awareness by one of the island's eminent dentists Dr. Sakunthala Gunawardena, and a lecture for parents on Child Psychology by Psychologist Miss Keshala Gunawardena. The eye screening programme was headed by Dr. Kumari Jayasinghe. In addition to this, Grade 1 entrants were provided a wonderful opportunity to win a scholarship at TVIC by sitting for an entrance exam.
The programme started off with an engaging and highly interactive presentation by Dr. Sakunthala Gunawardena on the importance of dental hygiene and proper maintenance methods. This was followed by an informative lecture on Child Psychology by Miss Keshala Gunawardena which provided a comprehensive study on disciplinary methods and nurturing and encouraging a positive environment in the home. The event ended on a high note and was a huge success which saw the participation of many students outside of TVIC as well.
Owing to the tremendous amount of positive feedback following the event, a similar programme will be scheduled for the following year.
